Bees
Having a word with nature's model community
I’m sitting here feeling disillusioned and disappointed by all the vitriol, the hatred, and the negative energy being proliferated across communities, around the world. It’s emitted from media, from screens. Inside actual towns, boroughs, and suburbs, what we see on TV does not seem to exist at the level of disturbed ‘reality’ digitally portrayed.
Let’s reel it in. I know we create our own realities, choosing (or not) to be kind, supportive, peaceful, satisfied. I know that we can turn the tide. So, this morning I scrolled through my photo gallery looking for beautiful spring/summer photos that feel like home, that feel like community and what did I find? The bees.

I’ve always been a tremendous fan of nature, frequently wandering off (mentally if not physically) after a cloud formation or to lean in closer to admire the marvelous engineering of a tiny spider’s web, or stopping my words to tune into the beautiful conversation the birds are having all around me. Do you think all this evolved for some genetically utilitarian food-chain purpose? Maybe, maybe not. While all creatures must eat, I believe that our senses were created to immensely enjoy the ride. To see and hear and wonder about each of our community members of all species. Intelligent? Yes. Divine? Also yes. Inside this free painting of existence to which we are exposed every minute of every day, the bees are working.
Bees, to put it simply, have one job to do - pollinate.
While looking for facts to integrate with the whimsy of this post, I saw this statistic. Don’t we all love stats? Sports stats, economic stats, health stats…the list is a mile long. This statistic, like all the others, creates an immediate and visceral image intended to momentarily arrest us so it can conveniently enter the file room inside our brain for future ease of retrieval. In this way, this morning, I’ve been pollinated with the most interesting statistic which I will subsequently cast like seeds in a field, across the many people with whom I interact throughout my remaining days in this plain.
While we’re egregiously pushing and shoving over colors - blue red black brown yellow white; religions - Allah Yahweh Brahman Buddha; wealth/possessions (comeonman!); land; etc., etc., etc. - the bees are quietly showing up for work 24x7 and feeding THE WORLD.
Please sit down. Please shut up. Please stop any petty, pitiful we/they bs for a few minutes. Please visit with, understand, and thank the bees while you enjoy a few of their tiny but momentous goings on which I captured while they were feeding me and you, feeding all of us.

Last summer I named my hot pink bottle brush plant Felicia because she reminded me of a showgirl, all bright, flamboyant plumage. The bees agreed! In fact it was so popular we had several ‘supermodel photo shoots’ with Felicia and her bumblebee entourage.

Friends and family will enjoy nosing around the woods with me through my posts under the Nature tab on my site😉
The bees also shared some sugar-love with our hummingbirds. I had to chase them away since the flowers were better for them. One bee got caught and wondered around woozy on a tabletop for a bit before flying off to fulfill its destiny.

Our flower variety and those in the ditch at the park brought in beatles, sweat bees, wasps, and occasional honey bees too. I wrote about many of these in other nature posts I’ll link at the end.

If you want to help your neighbors, help the bees. All funds donated at the link below will go the local bee conservancy in my area. Thank you for being part of it.🤗

No autographs, please, because the bees are sleeping. We’ll see them again soon, but I’m your huckleberry if you want to chat.

Pictures made me feel lighter and they made me smile 😊🙏🫶💕
Incredible photos !! The close ups are amazing.
A few ways this could be viewed. Scientifically, obviously. Religiously, with Gods creatures taking care of others. And, artistically, again very obvious. The statistic did surprise me. It wasn’t until you explained the white dots. Then it hit me over the head. It’s all pretty simple. Flowers and plants produce oxygen with humans need to breathe. The bees pollinate, ie. feed, the plants/flowers. That gives the flowers the food they need to survive, thus in turn keeping us crazy humans alive. With that thought, maybe 1 in 3 is a conservative number.
