Are Pets Saving the World or What?!
Looking to the pack for laughter and guidance
To quote the indelible Dr. Peter Venkman (of the original Ghost Busters) -
Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!
Bill Murray, who played the part of Venkman, spoke this line while explaining to the mayor of New York City an impending disaster of Biblical proportions. I adored the juxtaposition of an apocalyptical event with the mayor’s clear and very practical need to be a strong candidate in the next election. It was a hidden gem of EPIC proportions so many years ago.
Here we are in 2025 and nearly EVERYONE I know IRL and online is screaming gloom and doom. Woe is us. The recent deaths of innocents is the end of us. The end of peace. Everyone is going for their pitchforks and torches to burn someone or something at the stake of their beliefs.
What the actual earthbound hell is going on? KNOCK IT OFF!
Let’s take a break from doom scrolling, doom thinking, and doom writing to remind ourselves of the eons 👀 of human existence. Remember the wars, the genocides, the diseases, the witch hunts, the droughts, the famine, the weather disasters….and we are still here. We have grown as a species and, by basic metrics, survived as apex beings. Now is the time to stop and think and watch and learn - maybe from our pets.
I’ve been in a deep fugue, so today I’m serving up some laughs at the expense of our beloved pets - family members who have their own strengths which they give freely to their packs. Dogs - pack behavior, sharing resources and safety, strong social skills to adapt to different environments and people. Cats - keen senses, excellent balance and reflexes to navigate falls, form social bonds for protection. Let’s take a breath, take a lesson, and have a laugh with our favorite friends and ultimately remember that the world is not ending. It’s ours to shape. We choose when, we choose how. Choose love.
