Ah Yes, the Holidays. It's Thanksgiving!
Golden syrup - the star of this show. Long live the King! Dessert with a side of memes!
As your families come together to celebrate and give thanks for their blessings this year, take a little time to reflect on your childhood memories of your blessed family fall feast and feel the pang of nostalgia that comes with the memories.
My husband and I were having lunch at one of our favorite restaurants in Ohio recently when I saw they had pumpkin pie on the menu and was immediately struck by a feeling of nostalgia so strong it brought tears to my eyes. The sudden, sweet, piercing memory was of my grandmother’s pumpkin pie the way my Dad ate it. He added King (golden) syrup first and then whipped cream. It wasn’t the atrocity we call Cool Whip either; it was fresh whipped cream. King syrup was also used for shoefly pie, again made by my grandmother.
The poor waitress was confused by my request for King syrup, but asked the kitchen anyway to no avail. While we waited for our meals, we geekled the syrup and were surprised to find it’s still made. It originated in Baltimore, MD in 1904, produced by the Mangels-Herold Company. Beginning in 1986 when they bought the rights, Torbitt & Castleman began producing King syrup. By the early 2000’s, Carriage House Companies (part of Ralcorp) owned it.
As it turns out, over the years stores have simply stopped carrying it. What I found on Geekle was an excellent and very thorough telling of how Jerry Barr ultimately established a distribution company (Barr None Distribution) to provide this syrup all over the country, ensuring that dyed in the wool fans could continue to enjoy this delicacy for another century or so. I highly recommend his article, as the syrup appears to have become a way of life for him and his family. Read it here - Serving the King
Side note - When we were young during some of our rougher years the local church delivered our Thanksgiving dinner in a cardboard box. It was a turkey to cook and all the stuff to make sides. We lived for that box because it made our day special together as a family. If you have enough this year to bless others, I encourage you to visit your local church today to inquire about contributing to their holiday meal program in your community.
